How To get Started

Most likely you are reading this page because someone referred you to us and one of management committee directed you here to get information. We will invite you to play a single, free of charge, try out game. This is a chance for us to meet you and you to meet us and assess each other's style of play. If we both agree you would be a good fit for the club then we will add you to our online roster with which ever status you prefer (Full-time or Sub) and you will start getting our emails each week to set your status and learn what team you are on. Players can pay their dues via our Venmo account(s) or bring cash or check to a game.

Who Are We

The Philadelphia Blues Ice Hockey Club (The Blues) is a federally registered and recognized non-profit social organization that organizes twice weekly pick up ice hockey games using the dues our members pay to participate. We also participate in an annual charity game, participate in an annual outdoor game, sponsor an annual summer BBQ for families, and socialize often both after the game (Summer BBQs) or otherwise. New members are acquired only through invitation from other players that can vouch. We currently sponsor 2 different games each week all year long over 3 4-month long seasons as noted below.

Weekly Sponsored Games

We offer a limited number of Full-time discounted roster spots that guarantee you can play each week and we offer Sub spots for players wishing to pay a little more per game played when they can. We limit roster spots because we also limit the amount of players per game to 28 (2 goalies and 13 skaters a side). Though we don't always draw that many players per game there are instances where we've had to turn Sub players away.

We have players of all ages and all skill levels. If you poke around our Gallery area on the website you will see we value having fun and enjoying other's company above all else. We like to play competitive games of ice hockey for sure, but also in a manner that ensures everyone enjoys doing so. The aggressiveness of men's league style of play is very much discouraged here. If you are not comfortable playing with and involving all of your teammates then this is not the place for you to play ice hockey.

How we Organize Games

We sign contracts with the rinks we play to reserve our game times. A management committee take s care of everything needed. We've built our own game scheduler, notifier, and team picker into our website. Several days prior to a game we'll schedule the game on the website and it will send notification emails of the scheduled game. For each scheduled game Full-time players are assumed to be playing and Sub players are assumed to be unavailable. This notification email will include links to change your status (Full-time to 'not playing' and Subs to 'available'). This will get recorded on the website such that we can prepare for the game. A couple of hours before the game we will use the website to pick randomized yet balanced teams so as to ensure competitive games. The website will send a final picked teams email showing what the teams are/which color to wear. If you were a sub that indicated you were available for a game but did not receive the final picked teams email then we did not have room for you for that game and you should not show up.

Club Organizing Documents

Listed below are copies of our organizing documents that were required to obtain non-profit status and do business as a recognized entity named the Philadelphia Blues Ice Hockey Club. These documents include all of the information above plus additional, and complete, details about how we are organized and what our rules and procedures are.
